Gearing Up for the Super Bowl...
and all the media hoop-la and mega parties is making the city look good. A lot of these parties are being held in places that are showing up on the map for this one-time only event. Like...the Vault...it is really an old Downtown bank that has been closed for years, but it's being changed into a club for the weekend. Plus, the ticket prices...starting at $150 with some VIP as much as $1250 I have to admit the star-power is tremendous, but alas I wont be mingling because you cant PARK downtown! You either have to walk or take the shuttles being provided by the city. And that's not counting the Winter Blast and the NFL Experience...downtown Detroit will be packed with people. I'm not a fan for the congestion. As far as a Super Bowl party..probably the usual Sunday gathering at mom's with me treating some Popeye's chicken :) | | Thursday, January 26th, 2006 | | 12:32 pm |
Made Another Decision...
I decided that I will be cancelling my pull service at my comic book store. I check the Preview's shipping list every week so that when I go to the store I will know about how much I will be spending. My stuff came out to roughly $30 and since I only had $20 to spend, I figure push comes to shove, I will not get the Wizard and one book and pick them up next week. I get to the store and I was right, but my cost came out $40 because of a $10 reinstate fee. Since I didnt turn in a November order form, all the books on my pull was given a 50 cent reinstate fee when I turned in my January form. I was like find, so I was like, let me get the books I will proably read before Friday, therefore getting half now and half next Friday. I was told I couldnt do that because that would be "picking and choosing" however he would let me get the Wizard. I declined and told him I will only get the Previews. Then he ask me, "do you want to leave a deposit?" "Deposit for what? I'm coming back next Friday like I do every Friday I get paid." Then he goes how he had stuff that people hadnt picked up and how it costs him this and that and I'm thinking to myself, why is he coming at me sideways at that? He sees me everyweek but yet all I heard is about the people who dont pick up their stuff on a timely basis. As I'm leaving I tell him, I'm not upset since it's his store and his rules and that if I had known that missing the order form in November would have of had this affect, I would have prepared myself for it since this was first time I missed turning in the form. Then he goes, "No it's not, I just carried you the other times." I'm like, "Ok. So where is this month's form so I wont forget to fill it out this month." "I havent made it out yet since I'm still sorting books." I believe that was the same excuse I heard last month. I had to use the form inside the Previews book for my order and then stable it to his form. So I go to my second store and the atmosphere is totally different. First off, more people in a small space. There's no toys and game tables. Just comics. Stuff isnt bagged where they cant be read to see if you want to buy it. There's no bitchin' and moanin' about the struggling of the business and convos about stuff I have no idea about. So as I figure out my order form, there is probably like four books that I may get extra and if I play my cards right, I could probably read two of them in the store during the week they come out and save $8. Though I will probably give up saving 10% each week, the factor of non-committment will not be looming over my head. I plan to honor all the stuff I ordered for Feb and March will the Pack Shack, but once all that is done I will move on and may Green Brain Comics my new comic book home. | | Wednesday, January 25th, 2006 | | 11:39 am |
A Week Goes By So Fast...
and sadly there's nothing new in my life. Basically been working and sleeping. Detroit is all hyped over the Super Bowl, which I couldnt care less for until the home team was playing. I hear that the nurses and doctors had to be "on-call" in case something happened, but no one said anything about clerks. Doesnt matter either way since I will be off that Sunday will be enjoying the commericals of the game :) Been getting back into a regular workout plan. It's basically 30 minutes a day on the treadmill and I wondering if I could push it up to 60. The Writing Bug wont leave me alone so I wrote a short Freedom Force story for AMP. It serves as the set-up for the Rachel Summers story I'm doing for AMP. This scene was suppose to be the intro to Infinity#13 but I chose to write it for AMP to stop all the reprints going on there :) My boy Earl is having domestic problems again. I guess his wife kicked him out because he lost his temporary job (which I didnt know about until he wanted me to come get some books form him). He called me late at work on Monday asking if I could keep some stuff for him. I didnt want to tell him no since I was being slammed at work and really couldnt talk to him. It was obvious in his voice he was down and out. I told him to call me Wednesday morning since I was off, but as I write this he has not called and I have no way to reach him. So my plan today is to be my Slottlifting on which will take me into the evening. From there is church and then to my mom's for a bit. As always, my offdays are just as busy as my workdays, but as long as I can read some comics for free I dont mind :) | | Wednesday, January 18th, 2006 | | 2:45 pm |
Wednesday's Workday
I didnt do anything exciting before going to work. I did leave hearing to get some gas and saw how prices with up fifteen cents due to our overnight snowfall. I did get a Speedway Rewards card which gave me a five cent gas discount so I wasnt too upset after the trip. Work was work. Was able to get my e-box back to a manageable size. Though I will probably be AMP-exclusive at Altmarvel once I get my last two stories done, I am brewing up a AMP tale to serve as a prelude to one of them. I got home and managed to watch American Idol and had a ball laughing at the hopefuls. However I have a feeling that yesterday's show was much better. I also taped Lost but I will save that for tomorrow's afterwork viewing. I Need to Get My Sleeping Patterns Under Control
Now that I'm not in school, I'm getting up around 10:30am instead of 8am. The time difference can be daunting at times. Earl calls me and in-between his useless banter, he tells him he was returning to a shelter because his and his wife are on the outs again. I learn it was because he was laid off from his temporary job and was basically unemployed again. He was basically unemployed when they got married, so I'm sure they saw the money problems before they jumped the broom. Since he wanted me to get some Wetworks comics he "borrowed" from me, I got up and went to his house. The one book I wanted from him that he has of mine that I havent read, the Gen X/Gen 13 crossover was buried in a closet somewhere that he couldnt get to. I dropped him off at Wayne State University where he claims he would job serving over the net. It's hard to talk to him about my woes at work because in his own subtle way his gives the "at least you have a job" responses. Work was work. I cant wait until the weekend so I can spend so time away from that place. The most disappointing moment of the day--I set the VCR to tape the season priemiere of American Idol. Somehow I set it to record TOMORROW instead of TODAY. Now I missed all the bad singers.... MLK Holiday Wasnt Much of a Holiday For Me
I still havent taken my car to the repair shop and I was going today but when I called a car rental, they didnt know what I was talking about when I was referring to State Farm paying a percentage of the rental. They needed to know exactly how much they would cover. I was about to call them to find out when my mom called. Since she had the day off, she needed me to talk her to a friends house for a Mary Kay party. While she was there, I went to the comic book store to get my Slottlifting on, and in the end I bought the Nextwave Marvel Masterworks reprint. From there we went to the grocery store so we would have dinner in time to watch 24. Jack Bauer is the man! My brother was over my mom's house and someone had to take him home, so who else was drafted: me. I dont get home til 12:30am. What was planned for a downtime day spend on writing has faded anyway into nothingness. Maybe I will get something done on my next offday | | Saturday, January 14th, 2006 | | 10:49 am |
Getting Tired of My Job...
better yet I should say, I'm tired of the backstabbers. There's always been this "rift" between co-workers and there are three "classes": doctors nurses clerks Despite being a "team" we clerks are always treated as second-hand citizens. I am the "favorite" among the clerks since I'm a "yes"-man. If you come to me with something, I do with it no lip. However, I didnt do that on Saturday and this nurse wrote a half-page letter to my manager about "keeping me in check." However, she continues to smile and laugh in my face as if she didnt write the letter. The letter was dismissed, partly due to the good reputation at my job. The thing about it was that if I was on some type of disciplary watch, this letter could have been a nail in the coffin of me losing my job. It pisses me off that some nurses think they are so above us and think they are our bosses instead a co-worker. I dont go run to their boss telling on them when they are rude to parents. Maybe I should. Saturday we had two-calls for the midnight shift and if the same was going to happen on Sunday it would be my time to stay over. We had one call-in, but I found someone who wasnt working to come in, which was a lifesaver for me. Right when I get ready to go, the midnight supervisor acted liked she was mad with me for calling her in. I guess she would have perferred someone to stay over. Overtime is overtime, right? Why force someone to work 16 hours when someone fresh can could in and take over? I dont understand the logic. At that point, I didnt care because I was going home. I go to work to work and not involve myself in the "politics" of the workplace.. Everyone else should do stay in their place and do the same. | | Thursday, January 12th, 2006 | | 12:42 pm |
Made My First Life-Straightening Decison
after a good night's sleep, I finally decided to step down as a writer for Altmarvel. In order to make time to enhance my spiritual life, I had to get rid of the sins and weights in my life. Though Altmarvel isnt a sin, it is definetely a weight since I spent every waking moment thinking about it. I will stay as a reviewer but after I finish a couple of more stories, I will leave the writing to the others there. | | Wednesday, January 11th, 2006 | | 12:29 pm |
Funny A Difference a Day Makes
I got up at 10am and told myself I would finish revising my WCA Annual before I leave to go to the doctor. My cut off time was 1pm and I was was going to leave at 1:30pm. I got half of my revising done because I allowed myself to be seduced by the Black Planet demon. Doctor told me my blood pressure was 133/88. Since she was tired of giving me free samples, I was given a script and told to come back in a month. Since the doctor visit was less than 20 minutes, I did a quick drive-up by to my school for a financial aid application. Last day of registration is Friday so until I find some money in 48 hours I will be skipping the spring semester. I get to the comic book store at 2:45pm and send two hours reading some recent comics. Brain feels like it was about to explode! I did buy Tales of the Champions#3 since it was the last copy. I get to the Waldenbooks in the mall by 5pm and read two more books and skimmed two others. I bought a magazine and signed up for the Borders Reward Membership which to my suprise, I must complete online. Guess it saves the clerks time from asking all the information. Got to church and heard a message that I have to take to heart and actually apply. I did catch a nasty vibe at church (was probably lingering throughout my subconscious and just came out there) and my mom picked up on it and thought it was directed to her. After getting another sermon from her at her house. I head home around 1am and start to evaluate the stuff in my life I need to change to better myself for 2006 Current Mood: determined | | Tuesday, January 10th, 2006 | | 12:24 pm |
I Got Ready to Order to Anime On Demand...
and though I prefer The Anime Network over Comcast's Anime Selects, Selects offered Street Fighter Alpha:Generations. Since today was the last day to see it, I went to order it and found the whole section gone! Maybe I waited a day too late to check it out. Nothing special happened at work expect for me hearing everyone talk about how they were less than honest at previous jobs. They all noticed I didnt have any such stories to tell. Yep, that's me, the square of the bunch. Altmarvel reading of the day: Avengers 461-462 Marvel reading of the day: Marvel Team-up 16 (a very good read) | | 12:23 pm |
Crazy Week
I took Thursday off to take my mom to the doctor. She's doing fine and it's believed that her stress was work-related. I took Friday off for me. The first part of the day was typical of a payday Friday. Paid bills, got a haircut and bought comics. Another nail in the coffin has been placed in my decision to leave my current "#1" store. Due to my car being down, I didnt turn in an order form for November, which could cover this month's comics. Not thinking, I only got three books and I paid $10.47. As I was on the road I turned around because I should of had the 20% discount on this $2.99 books and when I got back he said it was due because I turned my November form in late and the policy is that occurs, a 50 cent charge will be placed on each book. Since I pointed out that I didnt turn one it, that shouldnt apply. He counterpointed that if that was the chase that I shouldnt have gotten any books, which isnt the case because they were ordered for me. He was as dumbfounded at this as I was, but since there were other customers in the store and I had to go, he said he would look into it. Since only three books are coming out for me this week and since I may not get the new comic book day discount, there is no need for me to rush to pick them up Wednesday. I spent the midpart of my Friday getting ready for my Friday night event. I when out to another one of those radio sponsored parties in surburia to see if the scene would be different and it was. It was cool since it was really a bowling alley with two levels. Even better was that there was eye candy galore that wasnt barely legal. However, false advertisment could be called for since "three dancefloors" really was a small dance space and two cages. Security pissed me off because 1) I couldnt stand in the "dance space" if I wasnt dancing (and believe it was not easy to not be in the dance space since the place was packed and there was little space to stand in anyway) and 2) I had to be dancing with someone to remain on the dance floor. A rule that didnt apply to the ladies. However, I took the experience for what it was worth. Time away from looking at the walls of my apartment. Saturday was no less exciting. I took my mom to dinner and a movie. Zorro and IHOP makes a wonderful combo. Afterwords I went grocery shopping. Sunday was equally exciting after going to Target and watching Lifetime and Hallmark movies before heading home. Monday was my return to work and it was crazy! So crazy I barely had time to check my e-mail. The highlight of my day was watching Flavor of Love and TNA wrestling after work. With all that said, life is back to normal for me | | Wednesday, January 4th, 2006 | | 12:56 pm |
Crazy Stuff In the Past Couple of Days
I stayed up to 4am on Sunday finishing the WCA annual. I was going to take my car to the dealership to get the minor repair done to it but they were closed. I spent most of Monday house-cleaning (a couple of clean patches can be seen in my apartment now) and watching TV. I thought I would at least get started on WCA 35 but after saying up to 1:30am watching TNA wrestling, I didnt have the strength to do any writing for the night. At work yesterday I get a call from my brother saying that he took my brother to the hospital because of some heaviness in her chest. I leave work so I could go be with her and she stays she's fine and it was probably do to work-related stress. Since my brother hadnt been to sleep in two days because of work, he went home and I stayed with her. They wanted to keep her overnight and do a stress test in the morning, but since the hospital was full, we may have to spent the entire night in the ER. I must admit that people have it much easier at Children's Hospital than compared to the adult hospitals. They dont have to go through metal detectors each time they go in and out of the building, they arent stopped by security every step of the way. People complain when we ask them who they are going to see, but at these other hospital, there is zero tolerance for that. Security even had a K-9 unit! So when parents start tripping at work for now on, I'm going to tell them to know their role and shut their mouth since they we dont subject them to a ton of stuff other hospitals do. So anyway, by the time I got settled in, kicked off the shoes and prepared for the overnight stay, a nurse comes in around 1am and tells us they had a bed for her. They told us not to be alarmed since it was in the ICU. We didnt care so I stayed with her until she was settled in and I went home to get some sleep before returning today. I called in from work so I can go to the hospital and since visiting hours started at 11am I got there around 11:30am. Turns out the stress test is a 6-hour procedure and I was given the option to seat in the visitors lounge. I left my mom's Bible on her stand to show that I did show up and decided to hit the library and the comic book store to burn time until she's done. Hopefully she will be able to come home today, but I guess we will know once the results of the test come back | | Sunday, January 1st, 2006 | | 2:47 pm |
So It's A New Year...
and nothing new has happened yet. I spent my New Years Eve at home since I got off work at 11pm and didnt want to drive anywhere so I watched the various tv specials and cruised the net for an hour before hitting the sack. I have today and tomorrow off so I plan to use that time to write and do some housecleaning. I'm halfway done with WCA Annual 3 and hopefully I can start and/or finish WCA 35 before I go to work on Tuesday. I dont plan to go anywhere for these two days. I will take my car in to get fixed tomorrow if the dealership is open and plan to get some mailing envelopes because some of my Ebay auctions may sell. They expire tomorrow and so far 3 out of 9 seem to have found happy buyers. My orginal plan was to use the tuition reembursement from my job to pay for the 65% deposit for my spring semester classes but since the last time I used it (which was 4 months ago) many changes have been made to the program. The only requirements was to have no displincary actions and passing grades. Now I must fill out four forms, one of which needs to be signed by the vice-president of something or other, a person I have never met. Even better this person is on vacation until the 9th. So any plans on getting this money by the 16th, the day classes start, is out of the question since it takes two weeks to get the reimbursement. Also I must sign a "commitment agreement" stating I will stay with the hospital for three more years! I have already been there for 12 doing the same thing. I doubt I will be here for three more, so I may pass on it all. I will use some of my offtime to search online for some type of financial assistance. Due to the holidays, everyone has gotten extra days off for some reason so I was able to go to the comic book store on Friday and get new books. Sadly, it seems that trips to the store are the highlights of my life. Finally saw Zathura and the 40 Year Old Virgin. For some reason the latter touched me in a way I didnt expect and wonder if my life will play out like the fanboy in the movie. The geek in me was so exciting seeing all the comic-related items throughout the movie :) I'm trying to think of any other important highlights I leaving out and as usual, there arent any. I guess it's time to end this rant and get back to my other writing duties. | | Monday, December 26th, 2005 | | 7:11 pm |
Holiday Was a Blast
didnt do much but go to the comic book store on Friday before work and after my hair cut and read a bunch of stuff from Alias and Image. Saturday I got up around 10am but since I had no pressing engagements I was able to finish half of the WCA annual. I plan to have it done by the New Year. I went over to my mom's to pick up my brother and took him to Gamespot but they didnt have the games he wanted. I ended up getting him the Street Fighter anniversary collection. Since stores were closing early was going to be closed on Christmas, I did some last minute grocery shopping. Just enough to last me til Friday. Then I got some pizza, Chinese food, and chicken as Christmas Eve dinner. I sat partially through some Lifetime Christmas movies until Midnight and give my mom her presents. From then I went to sleep and got up at 11am and lodged around until it was time to go to work. Work was slow and I thought I was going to do more writing when I got home, but instead I stayed up to 4am hanging out on Black Planet. I need to leave that thing alone, but when the lonely bug hits, I plunge myself in meanlessly chatrooms for some odd reason. So all and all it was a blast | | Wednesday, December 21st, 2005 | | 12:35 pm |
Finished Most of My Christmas Shopping Today...
but before I did I took some me-time and and saw a couple of movies: Doom and the Gospel. I thought Doom was pretty good, having not played the game. It was way better than the Resident Evil movie (havent seen the sequel). The Rock rocked :) The Gospel I thought could have been better. Ever seen the Passion, there really havent been a good Christian movie. I thought this movie would prove me wrong, but it didnt. It was a decent story, but it was missing something that I cant put my finger on especially in regard to its target audience. As I'm leaving the theatre I see a man and security around my car. Apparently the man pulled into the parking lot in front of me too fast and bumped my car. It looked like it was pushed back some and their was minor paint damage to the first bumper. The guy offered to pay for damages but after I saw a minor crack I decided against it. The guy instantly called his insurance and in a couple of days I will be hearing from State Farm again for another claim :) I took my mom around to get some Christmas accessories and I ended up getting my neice a Magic Pegasus Barbie because my mom said she wanted a princess. I gave my baby sister $20 because she wanted money. My mom gave my brother an X-box for Christmas so I may get him a game to go with it on Saturday. I was going to get my mom a gift package from Victoria's Secret but she saw Ashanti's perfume line and said she wanted that so I will surprise her with that. I thought I was going to get some writing done when I got home but I was so tired from the day's event that I went to sleep | | Sunday, December 18th, 2005 | | 5:10 am |
I Wasnt Sure If I Was Doing Christmas Shopping This Year...
since I would have little money leftover after paying rent and car note on Friday, but thanks to a midnighter not wanting to come to work, I am forced to do overtime. I'm only getting three gifts so I look forward to hanging out with the last minute shoppers this weekend | | Wednesday, December 14th, 2005 | | 1:06 pm |
Gains and Losses
It looks like life at my apartment is slowly returning to normal. Though power was restored, I was without hot water for two days. So when I get home tonight I will be taking a nice warm bath. It looks liked I get next-day shipping service for express delivery pricing. I got my Eastbay order on Monday so I'm rocking my new Reebok Throwdowns. All black, baby! Since Best Buy sent me some holiday coupons, I went and got a webcam. Now I can spice up my Ebay auctions and share my visage across the world wide web! It's book buy back season and I got $86 of $171 I spent on my Bussiness law book. I got an 93 on my final and will be getting an A out the class! Somehow I managed to loss my door entry keypass yesterday. I know I used it to get inside my apartment after school yesterday, but when it was time for me to go to work, I couldnt find it. I was late going to work and after an extensive search through EVERYTHING I see cant find it. So it looks like the surplus money I have will probably go to a new key :( | | Tuesday, December 13th, 2005 | | 1:21 pm |
Weekend Was Full of Surprises
Didnt do much on Saturday. I had to take my mom to a book signing which took longer than expected. While she was there, I was at home doing some much needed writing. By the time I picked her up and took her home, I went to the movies. Saw Serenity. Definetely the best sci-fi movie of the year. I spent the night over my mom's house because she wanted to use my car to go volunteer at the church at their 24-hour prayer center. I thought I would stay up in order to see the replay of Painkiller Jane. Sometime after 11pm I doozed off (I've been up since 9am) and woke up around 11:30pm when my mom came back home since she found out she was needed. I let her use my car to go to church in the morning since she was going with her friend to a church for another book signing. They went to dinner afterwords and she got home around 5pm. I used that time to do homework and somewhat study for my Business final. One of my co-workers invited me to her church for an evening services sponsored by the kids but I was unable to go. So as the family watched the 6pm news, we saw a water main burst and flooded my apartment complex and parking lot! The water ruined the laundry and basement storage rooms (luckily my stuff was stored in the second floor storage area) and knocked out power. So I was forced to stay over my mom's house another night and watched the same clothes I had on so I could go to school. My final was easier than I thought it would be and after it was done I went to check on the status of my apartment. Learning that power would be restored later in the evening, I had to go to work as is. When I got there, I learned that I had to train one of the three newcomers that was rumored to be coming our way soon. Turns out the one I was training would be working the morning shift, but for a few hours I was able to make a good impression on the new recruit :) After a long day's work I got home and finished the rest of my Accounting homework and put a dent in all the e-mail that had built up over the weekend. Other than that, everything was a normal weekend for me :) | | Saturday, December 10th, 2005 | | 1:12 am |
Payday Pumps Life into My Week
Week been very boring but today I did my usual trip to the comic book store and barber shop. I spend my waiting time for my cut in Waldenbooks and read a few books. After paying my cable bill I went to Green Brain Comics and read as many books as possible that were not available at Waldenbooks. As always when I get my check I plan my funds on paper but when the actually sending happens, plans changed. I had to rearranged my finances so I could pay the rest my school tuition so that I can get reimbursed for when I register for spring semester next month. I've been able to divide my lunch hours into four quarters to accomplish four things: eat read a real Marvel book read an AMU book write I finished the Magnetic North arc in Ultimate X-Men. I didnt care for the beginning but the ending changed my opinion on the story. I didnt see it coming. I've decided that with my Altmarvel reading that I will catch up by reading the latest arcs of the major titles first and then work backwards from there. I'm halfway finished with the Revision Quest X-Saga and from there I will start with the Spectuclar Spidey stories that figure some West Coast characters. I'm undecided if I want to divide my back-up feature in WCA into two seperate stories or not since the opening was longer than expected and the certain shift to the crux of the story I wanted to tell may seem a bit jarring. Though I have an idea what my next WCA arc will be, I've been finding some interesting characters in the Marvel Appendix site that is just begging for a revival. Dont know how much writing I will get done over the weekend since I have to study for next week's finals. I'm sure that once they are over, my writing will kick into overdrive. I hate having having all these concepts in my head with no way to release them. Hopefully that will change soon | | Thursday, December 8th, 2005 | | 12:30 am |
